THE GREENING CAMPAIGN IN FAIR OAK AND HORTON HEATH

Launch: Sat 7th March, 2pm, Wyvern Technology College

*As the extraction of oil becomes more energy intensive and less economic, the price increases; fuel and food become more expensive. People on low incomes are affected first. It is essential that planning and development of alternative energy sources can be put in place without delay.

Renewable and sustainable energy sources will gradually provide more of our energy needs, but it will not be easy to replace our currently high level of energy demands with renewables. One of the first things we can do is reduce waste, and therefore start to reduce our overall demand.

1. The Greening Campaign Phase One can help us reduce waste and cut costs:

The Public Meeting at Horton Heath Community Centre on Sunday 21st September went well. People who came to the meeting discussed ideas for the 'Greening Campaign Pledge Cards' to be sent to every household in the community. The ideas are all common sense ways to help us prevent waste, reduce our energy use and cut costs by encouraging more careful use of energy.

The eight ideas for the Pledge Cards are very straightforward, so everyone can take part in the campaign, including people who live in flats. It is important that we keep the Greening Campaign current in people's minds, and provide further activities leading up to the Launch.

After the Public Meeting at Horton Heath, more people have come forward to help. Liz Kent has been appointed Creative Director with a role to help promote, encourage, support and further the local vision.

*4. Eastleigh Borough Council is helping residents to insulate:

A large part of our current energy demand is used in heating (and cooling) buildings. Grants from the Government and Local Authorities are available to help provide insulation in our homes. By taking advantage of the grants and guaranteed insulation work, we can help reduce our fuel bills. *If people would like to apply for grants, please apply to the Home Energy Conservation Officer, Jane Altounyan, at Eastleigh Borough Council. If people wish to discuss anything environmental with us, we would be only too happy to hear from them. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information, by telephone on 07944 522135, or by email to: liz.kent85@yahoo.co.uk.

Fair Oak and Horton Heath Greening Campaign is a pilot funded jointly by Eastleigh Borough Council and by The Greening Campaign, a Public Interest Company

Bishopstoke, Fair Oak and Horton Heath will be the first communities in the Eastleigh area to run the Greening Campaign. Communities all across the South East are now using the Greening Campaign to get residents working together to reduce the effects of climate change and are having fun achieving their fantastic results. Liz Kent, a resident of Fair Oak has decided to bring the Greening Campaign to the Borough of Eastleigh and has set up a Public Meeting so that residents can come and find out more.

Terena Plowright, a resident in Petersfield who wanted to see her community begin to address the amount of CO2 it emits started the Greening Campaign in Hampshire. The Greening Campaign drew householders and businesses together to run activities to reduce the emissions.

Liz Kent said 'I was inspired by a talk that I heard Terena give and thought it would be wonderful to run it in our community. So many people say that they want to make changes and yet they don't really know how to do it. It would be great if we could all look at addressing this challenge together'.
